From "1024Foundation + OpenPie's 'AI for Good'" to "OpenAI Restructuring"
JANUARY 20TH, 2025

Many readers wondered the relationship between the 1024Foundation and OpenPie. OpenPie pioneered the data computing system (PieDataCS) and keenly perceived that with the in-depth development of this system for intelligent agent AI, the issues of AI safety and the unequal distribution of wealth caused by AI should not be underestimated. Therefore, before establishing the OpenPie commercial company, the 1024Foundation was set up first, injecting the ESG concept (i.e., Environmental, Social and Governance) from day one. Since then, these two sister organizations have been working together and developing in a coordinated manner.

Enterprises have an inescapable responsibility to eliminate the social inequality brought by AI. The 1024Foundation, in conjunction with OpenPie, launched the "AI for All Initiative (AI4AI) Public Welfare" and received strong support from partners such as the CMU Shanghai Alumni Association, Zhejiang PingShu, Fudan University, Shanghai University, and Minhang Crosspoint Academy at Shanghai Wenqi Middle School. The volunteers involved range from middle school students, educators to corporate executives, and their common goal is "AI for Good", to make the benefits of technology available to everyone. In addition, the 1024Foundation also cooperates with world-leading AI institutions such as CMU to discuss the construction of future models in a public welfare manner.

As for OpenPie, its core team is named after the Göttingen Partnership, inheriting the power of computation. They construct a large-scale model data computing system theory that is globally oriented within the country and realize a physical large-scale model data computing system. In addition, OpenPie has joined forces with the LTL Laboratory (Leaf Tree Labs) to build the fastest new hardware for intelligent access in the cloud. OpenPie, the LTL Laboratory, and the 1024Foundation, as the three-pronged drive, will jointly propel "data computing for new discoveries" and "AI for Good".

The establishment model of the 1024Foundation / OpenPie is in line with the company structure that OpenAI has recently announced. Both parties believe that there is a conflict between setting up ESG within a commercial company or commercializing within ESG. Therefore, ESG should be independent of profit-making companies, separate from the commercialization process, and progress in parallel.

On December 27th, OpenAI, which was positioned as a "non-profit company" at the time of its establishment, announced a reorganization and restructuring of its corporate structure. After the split, one part of OpenAI will adopt the "Public Benefit Corporation (PBC)" structure, focusing on generating revenue and expanding its profit map, aiming to inject ample funds into its own development; while the other part will remain on the non-profit organization front, committed to using AI to assist in charitable causes in the fields of medical care, education, science, etc., and contribute to human welfare.

OpenAI officially announced the split on X

As early as 2015, OpenAI embarked on its journey in the form of a Research Lab, with the initial aspiration of "advancing digital intelligence in the way that is most likely to benefit humanity as a whole, unconstrained by a need to generate financial return." At that time, they focused on theoretical exploration, conducting various experiments from game AI toolkits to robotics research, and publishing numerous academic achievements, yet without any actual products, commercial operations, or revenue.

Times have changed. With the rapid development of AI technology, especially the stunning debut of ChatGPT, OpenAI has become a global technological focal point. The launch of many new products/new models during the "12-day consecutive live broadcast" at the end of 2024 has once again pushed public attention to OpenAI to its peak. With the split in place, the parallel structure of OpenAI's for-profit and non-profit organizations has officially taken shape. The two complement each other. The thriving for-profit organization will continuously supply funds to the non-profit organization, helping it to move forward steadily and sustainably, working together towards the company's mission. The PBC structure also opens up a convenient channel for OpenAI's regular financing. Looking back at the last financing round, its valuation has reached as high as $157 billion (about 11 trillion RMB). The for-profit part will take the lead in future operations and business expansion, while the non-profit organization will "start anew", separately forming a leadership team and a workforce to continue charitable activities.

At the same time, OpenAI further clarifies its future mission - "benefiting humanity as a whole with AGI," and refines it into three key objectives:

● Carefully crafting a non-profit / for-profit hybrid organizational structure that best aligns with the long-term success of the mission;

● Strengthening the sustainable development foundation of the non-profit organization;

● Ensuring that all components of the company work in synergy and fulfill their respective roles.

Every technological revolution brings about a redistribution of social wealth and a re-employment of the labor force. As shown in the figure below, this wave of AI, as a new productive force, has led to a surge in social wealth that far exceeds the previous two technological revolutions - the Industrial Revolution and the Electrical Revolution.

AI technology tends to break through about every 10 years. In recent years, the vigorous development of generative AI has shown us the powerful capabilities of AI. However, the notion of "AI threatening humanity" is not baseless. We would rather discuss countermeasures too early than take it lightly. The foundation of AI is data computation, and the essence of data computation has always been about exploring the boundaries of digital intelligence. We believe that in this endless exploration of the data computing system, it is essential to adhere to the principle of "AI safety" as the top priority. The 1024Foundation and OpenPie will inject this principle into the practice and system implementation of AI and take on the responsibility of exploration.
